Whale watching as a tourist activity

Whale watching

Whale-watching, known as "whale-watching", refers to the commercialization of observing these marine mammals in their natural habitat, whether from land, sea or air. This tourism industry has experienced notable growth in various coastal regions in recent decades, becoming a thriving business.

Although it began in the 1950s in places like San Diego and excursions to Antarctica, it was in the sixties when it experienced a boom in the United States and Canada, later spreading to other regions such as Australia, New Zealand, the Canary Islands, Japan and Norway in the decades since. Cetaceans have become charismatic species, generating global interest and fueling growing demand for ecotourism.

Currently, around 104 countries participate in this activity, making it an essential component from an economic and social point of view for local communities, as well as for conservation and environmental education. Despite its economic success, research on socioeconomic aspects of cetacean watching remains limited. It is unknown how economic benefits are distributed in communities, who directly benefits, and what their true value is, considering environmental costs and possible alternative uses.

This industry, being a commercial activity, has environmental, economic and social impacts that require greater attention and research.
